Pathfinder Critique: Crisis Averted Edition

Back to the blessed status quo, the financial worries abated for at least another few months.

THE GOOD

- Sound decisions to run the baseball team's record start and the reader-submitted wind-damage photos on the cover. The design was a bit problematic, though, and I'll try to show you how that could have been done better at this week's meeting.

- Highly elucidative first-person narratives on Page 2, courtesy of Amy, Jed, Kasi and Sam.

- Nice debut story from Tessah Martin on the Spanish Club's Bad Poetry Night. Possibly stupid question here: Was the poetry written and thus recited in Spanish? Not clear from the story.

- An excellent film review of "Clash of the Titans" from Katy and another tasty restaurant review from Alex, this one on the throwback 410 Drive In at Clarkston.

- Four pages of graduation listings cut into the news hole, thus truncating the sports section, but it's one of those things you had to do. As I pointed out at last week's meeting, you will want to, next year at this time, make contact with the registrar's office to see about them providing you with a less unwieldy format. Trying to make heads or tails of that mess was a real challenge. I had to search forever to find everybody's favorite graduating journalists.

- Timely and topical question asked in Word on the Street, proving once again why it is one of this reader's favorite features. Would like to be able to read it without the assistance of a magnifying glass, however.

THE NOT-SO-HOT

- News release on Page 4 still included actual dates, instead of just the days, even though they were in the same week.

- An "admits" sneaked its way into the poetry story. Just to reiterate, use "said." Always use "said." You'll be glad you did.

- Again, failure to rewrite and edit news releases results in an embarrassing glitch, as per the last paragraph of the track and field story on Page 11.
