There's a crisis brewing in coffee land, and the Pathfinder is there to get the story. At least for a couple more issues anyway. ;-)
THE GOOD
- It's Jed's turn to tackle the Big Story of the Week, and he does a fine job of dispelling the rumors of a hostile corporate takeover at Campus Coffee. The thing I was most impressed by is his use of multiple sources, and while the real reasons for Tracy Lawson being removed as proprietor remain shrouded in mystery, the reader can draw his or her conclusions from what is said and unsaid. Great job.
- As usual, a trio of pithy and entertaining columns from the Page 2 scribes plus Sam Maynes' edgy doodle.
- Katy's review of "Repo Men" makes me want to run right out and see it. When it comes to the dollar theater. Or maybe Red Box. Whichever is cheaper.
- One of the reasons I enjoy Alex's restaurant reviews is she brings you along for the meal with a nice, easy style of writing. If I'm the owner of a local eatery, I want her to come review my place and then I'll take out a full-page ad in the Pathfinder (just because it needs the bread).
- With his astute review of Slash's eponymous album, Jeremiah has become my favorite Pathfinder music reviewer of all-time. Encore.
- Hooray! A mugshot of Lindsey finally accompanies her awesome Student Health column. This one adroitly breaks down the marijuana-vs.-alcohol conundrum. I can safely say she has a bright future in either the medical or literary professions.
- Another complete and compelling sports section, anchored in the cleanup spot by Jed's Sports Shorts.
- Two letters to the editor, proof positive that people are reading the Pathfinder, the best student newspaper published this side of the Snake River. Or the Clearwater River, for that matter.
THE NOT-SO-HOT
- Don't know what the point of the front-page photo was. I'm sure there was a story somewhere in there, but the cutline, while doing well to identify all the participants, doesn't offer an explanation.
- Let's not use "admitted" when referencing a quote. It implies there's a guilty motive in the person's statement. Better to just use "So-and-so said ..." That may be boring, but it avoids casting aspersions on the sources' statements.
- Titles, when they come in front of people's names, such as LCSC Vice President Chet Herbst, are capitalized. But when a title comes after the name, as in Chet Herbst, LCSC vice president, you lower-case it. Check your AP Style Guide entry for titles.
- I do believe the people whom Amy has been escorting around campus these past two years would be referred to as tourists, not "tourees."
- Easter celebrants of whatever religious intensity spend their time dyeing eggs, not dying them.
- Still had to squint to read Word on the street. But maybe that's just a problem of my 50-year-old peepers.
- On second thought, we might have wanted to spike that first letter to the editor.
