Pathfinder Feedback: Issue No. 8

Newsflash: UI to hold journalism conference ...

THE GOOD

Another tantalizing cover from the Jed Maynes Design Studios (employing Chinese prison laborers, mayhaps?).

A bunch of fun opinion offerings on Page 2. Especially enjoyed Kasi's column on the origins of her incredible chick magnetism.

Meritorious scribing in the A&E section from the Big Three: Kaylee, Jeremiah and Alex. My favorite paragraph of the issue comes courtesy of Miah's album review:

"In his older age, Erickson's voice is very different from his work with 13th Floor Elevators. Now he sings with a bit of an accent, giving many of the first tracks a country feel. He sounds much more vulnerable now, and there is truth in what you hear. That or he's still just as crazy as he was in 1969, when he was arrested for possession of marijuana and determined to be clinically insane."
The Student Spotlight feature on Kandy Hall was so compelling I wished it had gone on for at least another seven or eight paragraphs. Superb job with the interview, Alex.

Sarah's story on the Idaho gubernatorial candidates was focused and informative. And it's a good reader service to include the candidate's websites.

The various Warrior athletic pursuits were again blanketed in the sports section, including a noteworthy column from Jed. With any luck he hasn't completely pissed off either the women's golf team or the men's basketball team.

No surprise here: another money "Word on the Street."

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

Any particular reason why the other three candidates for governor weren't included on the cover? I realize they are all longshots to be the next leader of our fair state, but they were mentioned prominently in the story inside, so I think the rules of fair play would suggest their pictorial inclusion.

Would have liked to read more about KLCZ's Artist of the Week, Tauk. Surely would have been more enlightening than a Pathfinder house ad professing love and devotion for their readers.

This issue was published on a Wednesday; the speech by the founder of CO-STAR was scheduled to be held two days later, on Friday, not Friday, Oct. 15. No need for the date.

The lead on Kaylee's otherwise stellar movie review was rather lifeless. It reads more like a synopsis than a lead. While that summation might work as a nut graph, most readers require something a little more enticing to gain complete entry into a story. The moral? Leads are always important.

I think (I hope, I pray) Alex meant "bagels" instead of "beagles" in her restaurant review. Is she a victim of that dastardly evildoer Spell Check?

Kandy Hall did not contract a "fatal sickness." She would, of course, be dead if that were the case. It was a near-fatal or life-threatening illness. Thankfully.

It's Ted, not Ten, Dunlap who is the Libertarian candidate for Idaho governor. That story could have been accentuated with a little campus perspective — someone at LCSC (poli-sci professor, student body president, janitor, etc.) who would have been willing to go on the record as having a preference as to which candidate would most improve the fortunes of our Normal Hill community.

A rather funky story wrap on the bottom of Page 9. Not sure which of the ads on the page was the wrong size, but at least one of them was.

After reading the news release on McKenzie Heaslet's signing with the L-C basketball team, I was still left to wonder exactly how tall she is and what position she plays. Vital information, that.
