Pathfinder Critique: Issue No. 19

Easily the best issue of the semester and possibly the entire year. Now, if we could just sell some advertising, we'd be golden like a Rice Krispy treat.

THE GOOD

Another fine cover featuring the action shot of two L-C students playing Wii, referring to the inside story on Page 3.

Opinion page was a veritable knockout, with Jed and Kelly-Rae's mini-editorials and a knowledgeable and thought-provoking column by Nathan on the regime-change movement going on in Egypt.

My heart soared like a hawk at the presence of the story on the student senate, on Page 3. Great job. Let's build on it through the rest of the semester by trying to have some kind of a report, even if it's just a recap of the weekly meeting minutes, in every issue from here on out.

Sarah delivered a thorough piece on the campus visit by Stephen Condon, the second presidential candidate. Lots of detail and color in that story.

Viktor's first column was a winner, in which he explores the opportunities for cultural exchange on campus and beyond.

Student Spotlight on Trisha Stouder was incredibly interesting and moving, so much so that it could he been turned into a much more extensive feature (still could, actually). An outstanding choice of subject by Alex (or whoever came up with it).

A&E offerings were once again quite readable and informative, courtesy of Jeremiah, Kaylee and Alex. Alex's restaurant review was especially mouth-watering — literally.

A satisfying sports section, led by the big news of LCSC creating a hall of fame and planning to induct retired baseball coach Ed Cheff later this spring. Jed remained on a 19-0 streak of quality offerings with his Sports Shorts column, this one on how to get your mojo back if you've misplaced it. NOTE: It's good that he's started writing a headline for that feature, but it needs to be more prominently displayed than just an italicized sentence at the beginning of the story. Make it a headline; you won't be sorry.

Word on the Street feature was, as usual, fabulous. Very timely question with interesting responses ... BUT ... the responses should have been set off by quote marks.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

Svoboda's name was duplicated in both the main teaser head and subhead on the cover. Since Viktor is not yet a household name on campus, he should have been referred to in the first part as "new columnist." Also the top teaser on the page, about L-C's nascent hall of fame should have used a semicolon instead of a comma.

While they're not hyphens anymore, we're still having issues with the long dashes. A long dash requires a space on either side of it — like this. Otherwise, it looks like this—which is wrong. I've heard, over the past couple of years, people saying there should not be a space. Don't know where that's coming from, but that is incorrect.

I know it's long, but you need to spell out Associated Students of Lewis-Clark State College on first reference; ASLCSC is fine after that. Also: Remember that L-C is hyphenated; in several instances in Viktor's column is was "LC." Not correct.

Story on Condon needed to be aware that all his ideas and proposals are at this point hypothetical; he hasn't yet won the job. In the same story, the reference to the third candidate's visit should have been just "Thursday"; the actual date, Feb. 3, was not necessary since it was the day after this issue came out.

We don't use the acronym first and then spell out the name in parentheses. It's the other way around. WRONG: JCA (Japanese Cultural Association). RIGHT: Japanese Cultural Association (JCA on subsequent references).

The news release on the enrollment record needed some serious editing, mostly to excise all the institutional self-promotion it contained. To say that "LCSC continued to take on a bigger role in Idaho's higher education" because of its enrollment increase is debatable (the University of Idaho also saw its numbers increase) and should not be part of an objective news story, unless it's a quote from a source.

Similarly, the story on financial aid gift card winners was newsworthy but read like a shill for the program. AGAIN: We need to edit all news releases to make them as objective as possible.

The brief on the Billboard Top Ten Alternative Albums needed to have quote marks around all the album names. Are we just cutting and pasting that onto the page from e-mail? If so, please desist. That's lazy journalism.
