Pathfinder Critique: Issue No. 18

Groundhog Day approaches, as does Super Bowl XLV. Wonder which team, Packers or Steelers, Punxsutawney Phil is backing this year?

THE GOOD

New cover design continues to impress. Nice font choices; effective teasers. Also like the experimentation with new column logos inside. Might want to continue fine-tuning those, mostly regarding their reproduction quality.

Editors’ vignettes were tasty literary snacks, as was Alex’s column on the adult joys of rewatching one’s favorite childhood cartoons. Wonder who’s up next in the column-go-round.

Much livelier interview in Student Spotlight this go-round, focusing on (potential ASLCSC presidential candidate?) Andy Ridinger.

As always, a trio of excellent pop culture reviews from Kaylee, Jeremiah and Alex. Especially liked Alex’s descriptions of her Shroom burger at Hogan’s — made the ol’ salivary glands start running.

In his Sports Shorts column, Jed offers a well-reasoned and compelling defense of Chicago Bear quarterback and Twitter victim Jay Cutler.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

No periods are necessary in headlines, as per the cover. Related reminder: Headlines are almost always written in present, not past, tense.

I think Jed meant “sap” instead of “zap” in his editorial. "Sap" means to drain or deprive, according to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary.

When setting off phrases in sentences, use long dashes with space on either side — like this. Not like this-this is a hyphen.

No need to include acronyms in parentheses after the first reference, if the acronym is understandable. Example: Marijuana Policy Project. Note it’s “NORML” not “NOMRL” as per the news release on Page 3.

A design boo-boo with the album review: First paragraph of a story should never start below any subsequent columns. Would have been better to have slid Miah’s column logo and the album cover to the right and start his story in the column to their left.

Names of music albums need to be set off by quote marks, as per Associated Press style. They are treated as composition titles.

The headline on Sports Short needed to be much bigger and situated above the story, not tucked in below the column logo. Also, “bologna” refers to seasoned sausage while “baloney” refers to figurative nonsense. There is a difference.

New Campus Club Calendar feature has a lot of potential. But I’m not exactly sure what ASLCSC’s role in it is because there is no mention of the student government within the feature on Page 12. If this is some kind of a sponsorship ad, great because we need the moolah, but there needs to be a reference to who’s paying the freight on it.

Pathfinder readers needed to put on their thinking caps to appreciate this week’s question-free Word on the Street feature. But it’s still money.
